Bigboy's Honor
Umar Raheem & The Renaissance Quartet         Play Sample Tracks

Umar A. Raheem, a Philadelphia native, became interested in the saxophone while still in high school. He began studying the instrument and music theory. He continued his studies and performed sporadically while serving in the United States Air Force.

Upon completion of his tour, he performed both as a singer and instrumentalist throughout the eastern United States and abroad.

An expressive and inspirational performer, Umar's major influences were Gene Ammons, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. He has performed as a soloist in numerous bands, including the Lex Humphries Sextet, The Jymie Merritt Forerunners, Reverie, The Monnette Sudler Quartet and others; in concert, clubs, and on radio and television.

He presently appears with the Arpeggio Jazz and Music Ensemble and his own group, The Renaissance Band.

A prolific composer, arranger and orchestrater, his music is innovative, inspirational, and in the best classical jazz tradition.

Playing guitar is Monnette Sudler. Monette is one of the premiere jass guitarists in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. See adds a strong presence and interprets each composition thoughtfully.

Playing accoustical base is Warren Oree. Warren brings creative energy and inspiration to the session. His unique voice helps five the tunes shape.

Playing drums is Lucky Thompson of Philadelphia. His percussive artistry and technique are well known. He gives the music a joyful "snap, crackle, and pop."

Playing keyboards is Jeff Knoettner (tracks 1,2,3,5 & 7). Jeff's technical wizardry is outstanding. He expresses the music with dynamic inflection and warmth.

Also playing keyboard is the legendary Alfie Pollitt (tracks 6,8 & 9). Alfie graces the listeners with beautifully sweet and soulful solos.

This creative effort is a tribute to my father, the late Charles H. Truxon, Jr., whose honor was beyond reproach.
